President Donald Trump has officially proclaimed February 9, 2025, as the first-ever 'Gulf of America Day,' marking the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico. The announcement, made via a presidential proclamation, aligns with Trump's broader vision of reinforcing American heritage and identity.

The decision to rename the body of water was first floated by Trump during his inaugural press conference as the 47th President of the United States. He argued that the new name better represents America's historical and territorial legacy.

“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring. That covers a lot of territory,” Trump stated at the time.

Official Implementation

The renaming will be reflected in all federal documents and maps moving forward, although it remains uncertain whether educational institutions and state-level agencies will be mandated to adopt the new terminology. The White House released a video of Trump signing the proclamation aboard Air Force One while flying over the newly named Gulf of America.

Restoring American Pride

In the proclamation, Trump underscored the symbolic significance of the change, linking it to his administration’s broader mission of restoring national pride.

“As my Administration restores American pride in the history of American greatness, it is fitting and appropriate for our great Nation to come together and commemorate this momentous occasion,” the document read.

Broader Renaming Efforts

The renaming of the Gulf of Mexico is part of a wider push by Trump to reshape American geography and reinforce traditional national symbols. Among his other proposals is the restoration of Alaska’s Mount Denali to its former name, Mount McKinley, in honor of the 25th President of the United States.

With this latest proclamation, the Trump administration continues its efforts to redefine national landmarks in accordance with the president’s vision for America’s future.
