The United Arab Emirates has announced a groundbreaking collaboration with tech mogul Elon Musk for the development of the Dubai Loop, a high-speed underground transportation system. The announcement was made at the World Governments Summit on Thursday by Omar Sultan AlOlama, the UAE’s Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications.

The Dubai Loop is designed to connect the city’s most populated areas, offering a seamless and efficient underground travel experience. AlOlama made the announcement in a discussion with Musk, who joined the summit via video link.

“It’s going to be like a wormhole—you will wormhole from one part of the city and then, boom, you are out on another part of the city,” Musk explained, highlighting the futuristic vision behind the project.

Musk’s construction firm, The Boring Company, has previously developed and tested similar underground traffic tunnels in California and Las Vegas. These tunnels, according to Musk, provide a high-speed, traffic-free alternative to traditional transportation systems such as subways, while also addressing urban congestion.

Safety and Efficiency of Underground Travel

Addressing concerns regarding the safety of tunnel-based transportation, Musk emphasized that tunnels could be among the safest places to be in natural disasters such as earthquakes.

“Being in a tunnel is like being in a submarine— even if there is a storm above you, the water is still calm around the submarine,” he said, underscoring the stability of underground infrastructure.

Musk further argued that underground travel is a safer and more efficient alternative to aerial transport options such as flying taxis and helicopters, which have been explored as potential solutions for urban mobility.

Musk’s Vision for Government Efficiency

During the summit session titled “Boring Cities, AI, and DOGE,” Musk also addressed broader topics, including his role in the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), created by U.S. President Donald Trump in January to streamline federal spending.

He called for a “war on bureaucracy” and advocated for a more people-driven governance model in the U.S.

“We have a lot of support from the American public to improve government efficiency. It is something that appeals to voters of all types. Seventy percent of voters wanted more efficiency in governance,” Musk said.

He argued that cutting government inefficiencies would help reduce inflation, decrease deficits, and lessen U.S. involvement in international affairs.

“The U.S. has been pushy in international affairs. We should leave other countries on their own, and America should mind its own business,” he added.

Musk proposed reducing the size of the federal government and rolling back excessive regulations, warning that overregulation leads to economic stagnation.

“In the absence of a war on bureaucracy, you get more rules and regulations until everything is eventually illegal,” he cautioned.

He suggested that curbing government spending could lead to economic growth, citing a potential 4-5% increase in the U.S. economy.

“If the government reduces deficits from $2 trillion to $1 trillion, inflation will drop, and debt payments will be lower, benefiting the average American,” Musk explained.

He also highlighted inefficiencies in government technology, noting that outdated systems contribute to bureaucratic slowdowns.

“The U.S. runs on thousands of computers that don’t talk to each other. In order to improve efficiency in government, upgrades to this technology are needed,” he concluded.

As the UAE moves forward with the Dubai Loop project, the collaboration with Musk signals a commitment to pioneering innovative transportation solutions, further solidifying the nation’s position as a leader in futuristic urban development.
