A 24-year-old Afghan asylum-seeker drove a car into a crowd in Munich on Thursday, injuring 28 people in what authorities suspect to be a targeted attack. The incident occurred just ahead of the high-profile Munich Security Conference, raising concerns over security as the country approaches its federal election next week.
The attack unfolded around 1.5 kilometers from the conference venue, where international figures, including U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, were set to attend. Police said the driver steered his Mini Cooper between a group of police vehicles and accelerated toward the demonstrators taking part in a strike organized by the Verdi union.
Bavaria's state premier, Markus Soeder, called the event "probably an attack," though no link to the conference itself was suspected. Police quickly detained the driver, stating there was no longer any immediate threat. Witnesses described seeing the car speed up and strike several people, with the injured crowd members being treated at the scene.
Security concerns are expected to dominate the upcoming election on February 23, as public safety becomes a key issue following a series of violent attacks in the country.
