3,000 Workers strike on demanding unpaid wages
More than 3,000 workers of a construction company are on strike demanding unpaid salaries. They have even threatened to quit en masse if payments are not made soon.
The company has said that it’s working to break the impasse and that the non-payment is a temporary issue.
“We haven’t been paid since August. The many meetings with the company officials have not led to a solution. We were ready to return to work in return of a written assurance from the company on payment, but the management was not willing to give it in writing,” said a diesel mechanic with the company, whose name has been withheld.
According to him, the strike entered the sixth day on Wednesday.
“The workers, over 3,000, are in four labour camps - two in Khadra, one in Barka and one in Khabourah. Currently, we depend on the company mess for meals, but this facility may stop soon because the mess workers too plan to down shutters over non-payment of salaries,” a lab technician with the firm, said.
“The non-payment of salaries occurred due to pending bills. Since we undertake many mega projects, some of the bills take time to clear. We have held a meeting with Ministry of Manpower officials and have appraised them about the workers’ problems. We are making efforts to disburse the salary at the earliest. There are signs that it will be solved soon,” a senior management official told Muscat Daily.
