Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made an official visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where he held meaningful discussions with President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The key topics of their talks included the ongoing efforts to bring Ukrainian citizens home from Russian captivity and enhancing economic cooperation between the two nations.
Zelensky praised the UAE's critical role in facilitating prisoner exchanges and helping to save lives, expressing his gratitude for the Gulf country’s ongoing mediation efforts. He emphasized that the UAE's support has been instrumental in the return of many Ukrainians held by Russian forces, and further cooperation was discussed to continue these life-saving initiatives.
One of the highlights of the visit was the signing of an important economic partnership agreement, which opens up the UAE market to nearly all Ukrainian goods. This agreement aims to boost trade and make it easier for Ukrainian companies to access and sell products within the UAE, enhancing economic ties between the two nations.
The First Lady of Ukraine, accompanying the President, engaged in intensive discussions on humanitarian cooperation, focusing on issues such as rehabilitation efforts, support for large foster families, and the provision of aid for Ukrainian citizens affected by the ongoing war.
Zelensky expressed his gratitude for the UAE's ongoing support, noting that such cooperation not only helps save lives but also strengthens the relationship between the two countries.
Zelensky's visit also coincided with a planned meeting between US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin in neighboring Saudi Arabia, although Zelensky clarified that he had no intention of meeting with either US or Russian officials during his stay in Riyadh.
The UAE continues to play a crucial role in mediating between Russia and Ukraine, particularly in facilitating prisoner exchanges and efforts to reunite Ukrainian children separated from their families due to the war.
