On Wednesday, former U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he anticipates Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit the United States soon, though he did not specify a timeline for the trip. Trump made the remarks while aboard Air Force One, expressing optimism about the potential for a new trade agreement between the U.S. and China. He emphasized that discussions between himself and Xi could be vital in resolving trade disputes, including the ongoing issue of tariffs.
"We'll have, ultimately, President Xi, we will have everybody coming (to the U.S.)," Trump remarked, alluding to visits from other global leaders as well.
Xi’s last visit to the U.S. occurred in November 2023, when he met with then-President Joe Biden for a summit. That meeting resulted in agreements aimed at resuming military-to-military communications and addressing the production of fentanyl, a growing concern between the two nations.
Earlier, Trump and Xi had spoken before Trump's inauguration in January 2017, discussing a wide range of issues, including trade and the controversial app TikTok, which remains a point of tension in U.S.-China relations. Trump confirmed on Wednesday that talks with China about TikTok are ongoing, as the U.S. seeks to facilitate a potential sale of the app by its Chinese parent company, ByteDance.
Trump also shared his views on the conflict in Ukraine, asserting that he could broker a deal with Russia to bring an end to the war. "We can make a deal with Russia to stop the killing," Trump stated, further suggesting that Russia might be in a favorable position in the war due to its territorial gains.
The relationship between Washington and Beijing has remained tense for years, influenced by issues such as trade tariffs, cybersecurity concerns, the status of Taiwan, Hong Kong, human rights, and the origins of COVID-19. Trump's recent comments, though optimistic, underline the complex nature of international diplomacy and the uncertain future of U.S.-China relations.
As the situation continues to evolve, all eyes will remain on whether a potential diplomatic breakthrough will take place, not only in terms of trade, but in the broader context of global geopolitical stability.
