Saudi Arabia Condemns Attacks on Security Forces in Syria, Supports Government Stability

Saudi Arabia has strongly condemned the targeting of security forces and crimes committed by "outlaw groups" in Syria, the Kingdom’s foreign ministry announced early Friday.

In an official statement, the Saudi Foreign Ministry reaffirmed its support for the Syrian government’s efforts to uphold security, stability, and civil peace in the war-torn nation.

The condemnation follows violent clashes on Thursday in Syria’s Latakia province, where government forces battled armed groups loyal to a former special forces commander from the Assad era. According to the province’s security director, the confrontation escalated after authorities launched helicopter strikes on the armed factions.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based war monitor, reported that the clashes in Jableh and surrounding villages were "the most violent attacks against the new authorities since Assad was toppled" in December. The violence resulted in 48 fatalities, including 16 security personnel, 28 pro-Assad fighters, and four civilians.

Latakia, a Mediterranean coastal province, has long been regarded as the stronghold of the Alawite minority that formed the base of support for Bashar Assad during his rule. The recent turmoil underscores the ongoing challenges in stabilizing Syria following the ousting of Assad’s regime.

Saudi Arabia has reiterated its stance on fostering peace and security in Syria, aligning with its broader regional policy to support stability and counter extremist activities.
