The Health Ministry in Gaza has reported a sharp rise in casualties following Israel’s most intense strikes on the territory since the end of a recent truce. The ministry confirmed that at least 330 people have been killed, with the majority being Palestinian women and children.
“The health ministry has recorded more than 330 deaths, most of them Palestinian women and children, and hundreds of wounded, dozens of them in critical condition,” said Mohammed Zaqut, the head of the ministry.
Strikes Coincide with Planned Protests in Israel
The latest wave of Israeli airstrikes came just hours before large-scale protests were scheduled in Tel Aviv against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s controversial decision to dismiss the head of Israel’s internal security service, Shin Bet. According to a CNN report, the protests were planned in response to Netanyahu’s announcement last week that he would remove Ronen Bar from his position, citing “ongoing distrust.”
The move has sparked outrage within Israel, with critics accusing Netanyahu of scapegoating the security agency for the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023. Demonstrations are expected to take place in Tel Aviv’s Habima Square, with similar gatherings planned in Jerusalem over the next two days.
Israeli Defence Minister Vows to Continue War Until Hostages Are Freed
Amid escalating tensions, Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, reaffirmed the country’s commitment to its military campaign in Gaza.
Israel has identified two main objectives in its military operations: securing the release of hostages held by Hamas and dismantling the militant group’s presence in Gaza.
As airstrikes continue and diplomatic efforts stall, the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire, with mounting civilian casualties and growing concerns over the impact of the ongoing conflict.
