In an extraordinary display of determination, 59-year-old Vasanthi Cheruveettil, a tailor from Kannur, Kerala, defied age and societal expectations to successfully trek solo to the Everest Base Camp (EBC)—all while training solely through YouTube tutorials.

A Dream Fueled by Determination

While most nearing retirement plan for a quiet life, Cheruveettil had different ambitions. Despite objections from family and friends, she pursued her dream and reached the South Base Camp on February 23, proudly waving the Indian flag while draped in a traditional Kerala 'kasavu' saree over her trekking gear. She embarked on her journey from Surke, Nepal, on February 15.

Her self-preparation spanned four months, including intense training sessions. Her daily routine consisted of:
Three-hour morning walks 🏃‍♀️
Endurance-building with trekking boots 👟
Evening treks covering 5-6 km 🚶‍♀️
Learning Hindi for better communication 🗣️
Watching YouTube tutorials to master trekking techniques 🎥

Overcoming Challenges

Her journey was not without obstacles. Bad weather canceled her flight to Lukla, forcing her to find an alternate trekking route via Surke with the help of a German couple.

The gruelling trek required 6-7 hours of walking daily, with frequent breaks to avoid exhaustion and altitude sickness. “I walked slowly, using a stick, and took five breaths every few steps to prevent shivering,” she shared in an interview.

Funding Her Adventure

Cheruveettil financed her adventure through her tailoring business, with occasional support from her sons, Vineeth and Vivek.

With Everest Base Camp conquered, she has now set her sights on another ambitious goal—trekking the Great Wall of China.

Her story serves as an inspiration, proving that dreams have no age limit and that determination can push boundaries, even in the face of adversity.
