Tesla is recalling more than 46,000 Cybertrucks manufactured between November 2023 and February 2025 due to an exterior panel issue that could pose a serious road hazard. The recall, filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), highlights concerns over the durability of the vehicle's stainless-steel trim panel, which may detach while driving.

The recall follows a complaint made to the NHTSA on February 21, in which a Cybertruck owner reported a rail panel detaching from their vehicle. Tesla has since acknowledged 151 warranty claims potentially linked to the issue but stated that no crashes or injuries have been reported.

Tesla's corrective measure involves replacing the affected rail panel assembly with a newly tested, more durable version. Customers may notice unusual cabin noises or visibly loosening panels as warning signs before detachment occurs.

A Setback for Tesla Amidst Industry Challenges

This recall comes at a challenging time for Tesla, as its stock has dropped nearly 50% in 2025 amid growing competition in the electric vehicle (EV) market. The company has faced increased scrutiny over its aging vehicle lineup and the impact of CEO Elon Musk’s controversial public stance on political matters.

While Tesla does not provide separate sales figures for the Cybertruck, industry analysts estimate that this recall affects the vast majority of Cybertrucks currently on the road. Demand for the unconventional, futuristic-looking EV pickup has already shown signs of slowing, with declining interest from consumers toward the end of 2024.

Tesla leads the U.S. auto industry in vehicle recalls, with over 5.1 million vehicles recalled in 2024 alone, according to recall management firm BizzyCar. Many past recalls have been resolved through over-the-air software updates, but the Cybertruck's exterior panel issue requires a physical repair, marking a more significant challenge for the automaker.

With the recall now in effect, Tesla Cybertruck owners are encouraged to contact the company’s service centers for the necessary repairs to ensure vehicle safety and compliance with durability standards.
