Germany has announced the temporary closure of its embassy in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, due to escalating fears of renewed civil war in the country.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock confirmed the decision on Saturday, citing the deteriorating security situation as a primary concern.

"After years of fragile peace, South Sudan is once again on the brink of civil war. We decided this week to temporarily close our embassy in Juba due to the current situation. The safety of our colleagues is the top priority," Baerbock stated in a post on social media platform X.

The move comes as tensions rise in the East African nation, which has faced recurring political instability since gaining independence in 2011. Despite previous peace agreements, ongoing conflicts between rival factions continue to threaten stability.

Germany's decision aligns with precautionary measures taken by other international diplomatic missions concerned about the worsening situation in South Sudan. The German government has also urged its citizens in the country to exercise extreme caution and consider leaving if necessary.

The temporary embassy closure underscores the international community’s growing apprehension over the fragile peace process in South Sudan. Efforts to mediate and stabilize the region remain ongoing amid fears of escalating violence.
