Han Jong-Hee, co-CEO and vice chairman of Samsung Electronics, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 63 due to cardiac arrest, according to a company spokesperson.
Han had been with Samsung for over 37 years, playing a key role in the company’s rise as a global leader in consumer electronics. Appointed co-CEO in 2022, he oversaw Samsung’s consumer electronics and mobile devices businesses, helping navigate the company through a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
His death comes at a time when Samsung is facing increasing challenges in the semiconductor industry. The company has been working to strengthen its position in contract chip manufacturing while competing with rivals in the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) market. Last week, during an investor meeting, Han acknowledged difficulties in Samsung’s stock performance and outlined plans for potential mergers and acquisitions.
Han first joined Samsung in 1988 after earning a degree in electrical engineering from Inha University. He played a crucial role in advancing the company’s display technologies, including the rollout of LED TVs. Following his passing, Jun Young-Hyun, who was recently appointed as co-CEO, is expected to take over as the sole CEO of the company.
Samsung extended its condolences to Han’s family and acknowledged his lasting contributions to the company’s success.
