The death toll from the devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar has climbed to at least 1,002, with more than 2,376 injured, according to state media. The quake, the strongest to hit the country in over a century, has also caused destruction in neighboring Thailand, where authorities are scrambling to rescue trapped workers in Bangkok.

Massive Devastation and Rescue Challenges

The earthquake, which struck near Mandalay, has left Myanmar grappling with widespread destruction, collapsing buildings, and disrupted infrastructure. The US Geological Survey has warned that the death toll could exceed 10,000, given the extent of the disaster.

Myanmar, already weakened by a civil war following the 2021 military coup, is struggling to mount an effective disaster response. Damaged roads and communication blackouts are further hampering rescue efforts, making it difficult for aid to reach those in need.

International Aid Arrives

Amid the chaos, Myanmar’s neighbors, China and India, have stepped in with urgent humanitarian assistance. A Chinese rescue team was the first to arrive in the country, while India has dispatched a medical and disaster relief team, along with supplies to support emergency operations.

Collapse in Bangkok: Dozens Still Trapped

The earthquake’s tremors reached as far as Bangkok, where the collapse of an under-construction high-rise has left over 100 people trapped. So far, at least 10 fatalities have been reported in the Thai capital.

Rescue teams working through the night have detected signs of life from at least 15 individuals still buried under the debris, according to Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt. "No delays, no stops – every second counts in saving lives," he said, as heavy machinery was deployed to clear the rubble.

Meanwhile, authorities in Bangkok have received over 2,000 reports of structural cracks in buildings across the city. 700 structures are set to undergo inspections over the weekend to ensure safety, with a priority on high-rise buildings in the downtown area.

Race Against Time

With rescue operations ongoing, Myanmar and Thailand face a critical window to save lives. The earthquake’s aftermath has underscored the vulnerability of Myanmar’s infrastructure and the urgent need for international aid and coordination.

Authorities and humanitarian groups are urging for more support, as both nations brace for the long road to recovery following this catastrophic disaster.
