U.S. President Donald Trump is set to visit Saudi Arabia in mid-May, marking his first official overseas trip of his second term, according to a report by Axios on Sunday. The visit was confirmed by two U.S. officials and a source familiar with the president's travel plans.
Saudi Arabia has played an increasingly significant role in U.S. foreign policy, particularly as a mediator in key diplomatic discussions. The kingdom has hosted talks between the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine in efforts to broker a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict. Additionally, the White House has highlighted Saudi Arabia as a potential partner in furthering the Abraham Accords, a series of normalization agreements between Israel and Arab nations.
Earlier this month, Trump hinted at Saudi Arabia being his first foreign destination of the term. On March 6, he stated that he would likely travel to the kingdom within the next month and a half, referencing his first international trip as president in 2017, which also began in Riyadh.
A source indicated that an initial date of April 28 was considered but later postponed. According to Axios, the current plan places the visit in mid-May, though an official confirmation has yet to be made.
The White House has not provided an official statement in response to inquiries from Reuters, and Saudi officials have not publicly confirmed the proposed travel dates. As anticipation builds, further details regarding the visit's agenda and potential diplomatic outcomes remain awaited.
