At least six people have been killed and others remain missing following a violent clash between rival mining groups in Sorata, a municipality located around 150 kilometers north of Bolivia’s capital, La Paz.

According to a preliminary report from Bolivian police, the confrontation broke out early in the morning between two cooperatives vying for control over small gold deposits in the region, Reuters reported.

Departmental police commander Gunther Agudo confirmed that the dispute involved the Señor de Mayo and Hijos de Ingenio mining cooperatives. He said the clash resulted in “an explosion of great magnitude,” contributing to the fatalities and chaos.

Bolivia’s mining sector is divided into state-owned, private, and cooperative operations. The cooperative segment has often come under fire for illegal mining practices, environmental degradation, and frequent conflicts with other miners and rural communities.
