Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake conferred the Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushana, the country’s highest honour bestowed upon a foreign head of state or government, to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During a joint press statement held alongside PM Modi, President Dissanayake expressed admiration and appreciation for the Indian leader’s role in strengthening regional ties.

“I am pleased to announce that the Government of Sri Lanka has decided to confer upon him the highest Sri Lankan honour to a foreign head of state/head of government — the Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushana,” President Dissanayake stated.
“This prestigious honour, which was introduced in 2008, is conferred upon heads of states and governments for their friendship, and Honourable Prime Minister Modi highly deserves this honour; that is what we firmly believe,” he added.

The Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushana carries rich cultural symbolism. It features the Dharma Chakra, representing the shared Buddhist heritage that has shaped the spiritual and cultural landscapes of both India and Sri Lanka. The honour also includes the Pun Kalasa, a ceremonial pot adorned with sheaves of rice, symbolizing prosperity and renewal — a nod to the hopes of continued collaboration and mutual growth.

This recognition is seen as a milestone in India–Sri Lanka relations, emphasizing a partnership rooted in history, culture, and mutual respect.
