South Korea is grappling with a second tragic helicopter crash in less than two weeks, following a deadly accident on April 6 during a forest firefighting operation in Daegu. A 74-year-old pilot lost his life when the helicopter, which was deployed to fight a wildfire, crashed about 100 meters from the fire site in Seobyeon-dong, Buk-gu.
The helicopter, a 44-year-old Bell 206L model leased by the Daegu Dong-gu Office, was one of five helicopters working to extinguish the fire. The crash occurred around 3:41 PM, and while the fire was fully controlled by 4:18 PM, the crash has raised safety concerns about the use of aging firefighting helicopters.
This incident follows a similar tragedy on March 26, when a rented helicopter crashed in Uiseong, North Gyeongsang Province, during a forest fire operation, killing the pilot in his 70s.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash and reviewing safety protocols as South Korea faces an increase in forest fire activities during the season.
