A massive fire broke out late Monday at the Syctom recycling plant in northern Paris, prompting the deployment of hundreds of firefighters to battle the intense blaze. The facility, located in the city’s 17th arrondissement and adjacent to Paris’s main court complex, went up in flames as thick black smoke rose above the capital’s skyline.

Around 200 firefighters and 60 fire trucks were dispatched to the scene, working through the night to contain the fire that completely destroyed the building. The Paris fire brigade described it as a “major fire” and urged the public to stay away from the area to allow emergency teams to operate safely.

“The building is completely gutted and destroyed,” said Geoffrey Boulard, mayor of the 17th arrondissement, speaking to BFMTV. “Firefighters arrived very quickly, but the fire started underground and spread rapidly through the structure.” He confirmed that all personnel inside the facility were safely evacuated.

Flames lit up the night sky, and parts of the city’s main ring road were temporarily closed to facilitate emergency response.

The Syctom plant, operational since 2019, processed household waste for nearly one million Paris residents. The extent of the environmental and operational impact remains under evaluation.

No injuries have been reported so far, and firefighters continue efforts to secure the site and prevent further damage.
