In a rare Saturday session, UK lawmakers approved emergency legislation to safeguard British Steel, the nation’s last factory capable of producing steel from scratch. The move grants the government authority to take control of the Chinese-owned plant in a bid to protect the struggling steel industry.
Speaker of the House of Commons Lindsay Hoyle was seen arriving for the special session held in London on April 12, 2025, as the legislation was pushed through. Officials say the new law is aimed at preventing the shutdown of the site's blast furnaces, a key step to preserving the UK's remaining steel production capacity.
