A deadly fire that ripped through the upper floors of a 52-storey residential tower in Al Nahda, Sharjah on Sunday has impacted more than 1,500 residents, leaving five dead and 19 others injured, Sharjah Police confirmed on Tuesday.
The blaze broke out at approximately 11:30am, with emergency services rushing to the scene after reports of flames engulfing an upper-floor apartment. Despite rapid evacuation efforts by Sharjah Police, Civil Defence, and National Ambulance, the fire claimed multiple lives and caused widespread injuries and property loss.
đ¨ Mass Evacuation and Return
In the immediate aftermath, many residents â a diverse community of families and professionals â were displaced, some losing their homes and belongings. However, authorities have since allowed residents to return to the tower. Those whose apartments were severely damaged have reportedly been assigned alternate units within the same building.
Brigadier General Dr Ahmed Saeed Al-Naour, Director General of Operations and Security Support, expressed his condolences to the victimsâ families and pledged continued support:
âThis is a tragic day for all those affected. Our priority has been the safety of residents, and we will continue to support the community as they recover from this tragedy.â
đ Investigation Ongoing
Forensic teams from Sharjah Police are working with Civil Defence officials to determine the cause of the fire. Investigators are examining structural damage and possible sources of ignition as part of a full-scale inquiry.
đ¤ Community Relief Efforts
Humanitarian aid has also arrived, with organisations like the Emirates Red Crescent stepping in to provide food, shelter, and basic necessities to affected families. Relief teams are coordinating with local authorities to ensure all displaced residents receive immediate and ongoing assistance.
As the community begins to recover, questions remain about how such a fire unfolded in a high-rise building â and what measures will be taken to prevent future tragedies of this scale.
