China issued a strong warning on Wednesday, stating it is “not afraid” of engaging in a trade war with the United States, while calling on Washington to abandon its strategy of threats and pressure if genuine negotiations are to take place.
The sharp remarks came after U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that it was Beijing’s responsibility to return to the negotiating table. In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian stressed that any future dialogue must be based on equality, mutual respect, and shared benefit.
“If the U.S. truly wants to resolve the issue through dialogue and negotiation, it should stop exerting extreme pressure, stop threatening and blackmailing, and talk to China on the basis of equality, respect, and mutual benefit,” Lin Jian told reporters during a press briefing.
The escalating rhetoric signals deepening tensions between the world’s two largest economies, as both sides exchange sharp public statements while trade disputes continue to linger unresolved.
Despite the firm tone, Beijing reiterated its willingness to engage in constructive talks — but only under conditions it sees as fair and balanced.
