At least three people have died in Spain in an incident linked to the widespread power outage that brought parts of the country and neighboring Portugal to a standstill on Monday, the Civil Guard has confirmed to the BBC.

The fatalities occurred in the north-western municipality of Taboadela and involved members of the same family—a married couple and their adult son, according to El País. The trio were found dead in their beds by a care worker on Tuesday. Authorities are investigating whether carbon monoxide poisoning from a faulty power generator played a role in the deaths, though no official cause has been confirmed.

Other potential deaths related to the blackout are under investigation. In Madrid, a woman in her fifties died following a fire believed to have been sparked by a candle lit during the outage. The blaze in the Carabanchel district left 13 others suffering from smoke inhalation, with five hospitalized.

In Valencia, a woman in her forties reportedly died after her ventilator failed during the outage. While local police suggest a power cut may have contributed to her death, regional health authorities indicated she suffered from multiple health conditions and likely died of natural causes.

The massive blackout caused chaos across Spain, Portugal, Andorra, and parts of France. Metro services, traffic lights, and mobile networks were disrupted, and businesses struggled to operate without card payments. Long queues formed at functioning ATMs as residents scrambled to access cash and information.

Authorities are still working to determine the cause of the power failure.
