Driver steals Dh27,000 worth of medicines

A Pakistani driver has been accused of steal medicines worth Dh27,113, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

After some special type of medicine went missing Egyptian pharmacist, AA, 60, asked his staff about the item.

"None of the workers knew anything about the medicine which I recently purchased for a customer. However, CCTV recordings showed the driver, who is usually assigned to transport medicine, holding medicine sacks in addition to a garbage sack while getting out of the pharmacy.

"After asking him about the content of the garbage bag, he replied saying it was only garbage and he took it out to bin it," said the pharmacist.

But he was not convinced with the driver's response as the recording showed the boxes were inside the garbage bag.

The pharmacist decided to hold a meeting for all his staff including the driver to inform them that he will forgive whoever took the medicine if he turns them back.

The driver immediately asked, "What is the guarantee that I will be forgiven if I returned the medicine?"

The pharmacist lodged a complaint against him.

During investigations, SM, 29, admitted to taking the garbage bag but claimed that the assistant pharmacist had given him the bag to bin it.

He also claimed that the assistant pharmacist gave the massage device and other pharmaceutical items confiscated in his possession.

Assistant pharmacist denied the driver's claim assuring that pharmaceutical items go out of the pharmacy only against invoices.

After confronting the driver admitted to lying.

The court will reconvene on January 17.
