Strong quake strikes off Mexico's Pacific coast

A strong 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck off Mexico's Pacific coast on Thursday, but there were no immediate reports of damage.

The 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) deep quake, which took place at around noon, was located 215 kilometers (134 miles) southwest of Tomatlan in the western state of Jalisco, according to the US Geological Survey.

"No damage has been reported for now," national civil protection coordinator Luis Felipe Puente wrote on Twitter.

At least one Jalisco state government building was evacuated, local authorities said.

The state civil protection agency was checking Jalisco's 125 municipalities for any damage or injuries.

The earthquake's epicenter was 267 kilometers from the popular tourist resort of Puerto Vallarta.
