New York : Kuwait's Chairperson of the Cabinet's Committee on Women's Affairs Shaikha Latifa Al Fahad Al Salem Al Sabah said Tuesday that Kuwait earned the first rank among Arab countries in gender equality due to its pioneering role in empowering women and reinforcing their role in the society.

Shaikha Latifa made her remarks in a statement to KUNA on the sidelines of the 60th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW60), kicked off at the UN headquarters on Monday, where she heads the Kuwaiti participating delegation at the event.

The CSW60 is an appropriate venue to show the civilized side of Kuwait through highlighting Kuwaiti women's efforts in the country in recent years, Shaikha Latifa said, adding that it is also important for Kuwaiti women to
participate in international events, especially after the country gained a membership at CSW.

The Kuwaiti delegation at this annual gathering will cooperate with the Commission on improving Arab women status, adding that Arab women face violence, torture, and displacement in Occupied Palestine and other areas in the region that undergoes political turmoil.

Kuwait has achieved gender equality in education and constantly strives to accomplish a total equality in various fields, eliminate discrimination, and activate women role in the sustainable development field in accordance with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), she added.

Earning the first rank in promoting equality in health and political fields among Arab countries, according to the World Economic Forum, is due to the Kuwaiti government's keenness on boosting women's role in society and
benefiting from their potentials, Shaikha Latifa noted.

Kuwaiti women's determination to prove their presence and activate their efforts in development and community service fields was also another factor in achieving that rank, she said.

Kuwaiti women's efforts in the development process in the country will have a significant impact on reinforcing their status in the society and enabling them from obtaining further gains in life, she said, stressing the importance of women's presence in leading posts after proving their worthiness and potency in many fields.
