Eight-year-old boy caught being smuggled into Spain inside a suitcase reunites with his mother

An eight-year-old African boy caught while being smuggled into Spain in a suitcase of a Moroccan woman detained last month, has finally been reunited with his mother.

Adou Ouattara from the Ivory Coast was since then under the care of the border police in Ceuta, a Spanish enclave in North Africa.

The shocking image of the young boy crammed into the suitcase made rounds all over the world, showed the extreme measures migrants took to reach Europe.

Adou is now with his mother Lucie Ouattara following an emotional reunion in Cueta, after officials insisted on DNA tests to prove their relation.

After Adou was discovered, his father, who lives with his mother in Spain, was arrested and jailed,  under charges of abusing the child and attempting to smuggle him into the country.

According to his lawyer, the father said he had no idea about the suitcase and he  believed his son was to be brought in a car with a visa he paid for.

The father’s lawyer Juan Isidro Fernandez Diaz, had paid to bail out the father and hoped he would be released soon, accompanied the mother and the boy.

The father has been living on the Spanish Canary Island of Fuerteventura for seven years. His Ivory Coast wife had joined him and they were trying to bring over their children.

The lawyer said their 11-year-old daughter was allowed in recently but Ouattara's monthly salary fell short of the amount authorities required to care for two children, prompting the father to buy the visa.
