Dubai to get rid of mosquitoes

Dubai Municipality (DM) launched intensive campaigns to combat mosquitoes in more than 30,000 locations around the city on Monday.

Hesham Al Yahya, head of Pest Control Department of Public Health at DM, said that the rainfall that took place in April led to an increase of mosquitoes.

The department followed specific plans and programmes to combat the insect spread.

Working teams scanned 30,720 construction sites in Dubai during the past four months to monitor the cause of such spread.

Fines worth Dh100,000 were issued against construction companies for violating public health and safety regulations, which may have worsened the situation.

The department also increased surveillance in airports, seaports, horse stables and racetracks, public parks and nature reserves through advanced self-functioning mosquito traps. The municipality urged residents to report encounters with the disease transmitting insects (mosquitoes, flies and rodents) to the public health department through calling the toll free number 800900.

Department officials urged families to remain hygienic to prevent the insect's spread.
