Man slits open wife’s throat after she gives birth to fourth daughter
Patna: A man in Bihar slit open the throat of his wife after she gave birth to their fourth daughter. The woman with severe throat injuries has been admitted to a local government hospital for treatment but her condition remains critical, doctors said on Friday.
The incident, which took place at Ujhandi village in eastern Bihar’s Jamui district, defeats Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s much-publicised “Selfies with Daughters” campaign aimed at saving the girl child.
As per reports, the woman, Savitri Devi, was admitted to a local referral hospital three days ago when she went into labour. Soon thereafter, she gave birth to a healthy girl child. Her husband, Santosh Manjhi, upon learning she had given birth to a fourth daughter got very angry.
On Thursday, in a fit of rage, he slit her throat with a sharp knife while other patients were out of the ward. He fled the scene after she cried out in pain.
This is the third such incident in the past fortnight. On July 2, 30-year-old Pano Devi was beaten to death by her in-laws in Gaya district for allegedly giving birth to a fifth daughter.
Another woman, Seema Devi, was burnt to death in Muzaffarpur district the same day; she had given birth to girl twins. Reports said her in-laws tortured her before finally setting her on fire.
