Court jails police vehicle attacker

ManamaThe Supreme Appeals Court has upheld the sentence issued against of a defendant, who set a police patrol on fire. He was earlier given 15 years imprisonment. 

Two police officers sustained injuries as a result of the incident, which occurred in the village of Salhiya. Thirteen defendants were earlier held guilty in connection with the case with 11 of them receiving jail terms of 15 years each, while the others were handed down only three years behind bars each. 

According to court files, the convicts carried out their assault when they spotted the police car moving on a public road in the village. The car was completely gutted in the attack. 

Medical reports showed that one of the injured police officers suffered burn wounds to his face, hands and legs. Though he was critical initially, he eventually survived. The other police officer’s injury was minor. 

The suspects had been charged with attempted to kill police officers, damaging a public property, possessing firebombs and participating in an illegal gathering.
