Gun Violence; 17 people injured and one died
Philadelphia
With 17 people injured and one killed, gun violence erupted in Detroit and Philadelphia on Saturday at summertime block parties
A gunman opened fire on a block party in Philadelphia on Saturday night, leaving seven people injured, including two children, ages 2 and 10. In another block party shooting, the Detroit police said one person was killed and nine were wounded on Saturday night when someone opened fire at a party on a basketball court.
Lt. John Walker of the Philadelphia police told that the shooting happened about 10 p.m. in West Philadelphia. He said it looked as if the gunman had fired randomly down the street and hit anyone in the way.
Lieutenant Walker said both children were taken to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in critical condition, the younger one with a neck wound. He said the other victims, ranging from 15 to 25, were taken to another hospital in critical condition.
He said it was “just a terrible situation.” No other information was immediately available.
Assistant Detroit Police Chief Steve Dolunt said a 20-year-old man was killed at a part on a basketball court in on the city's west side. The victim was not being identified.
Another man was critically injured, while five men and three women were listed as seriously injured. The victims ranged in age from 21 to 46, he said.
Dolunt said the shooting happened at a neighborhood party that included a barbecue attended by families with some small children in strollers.
“Through the grace of God, no children were shot,” he said.
