Up to 40 feared dead in blaze at party

Oakland : Some of the people unaccounted for in the devastating fire in a warehouse near San Francisco have been found alive, authorities said Saturday.

Dozens of people were still reported missing after the blaze engulfed a two-story warehouse in Oakland as a concert was underway there late Friday.

Nine bodies have been recovered. Up to 40 people are still feared dead in the fire as workers picked through the rickety warehouse, which was used by artists and musicians.

Firefighters withdrew from the building to shore it up when part of the fragile structure and some of the walls began to move.

Sergeant Ray Kelly of the Alameda County Sheriff's department said at a news conference that about two dozen people who were reported missing had been located.

Still, at least two dozen more remain missing and efforts to locate them continue, he said.

"We don't know how far into the process we are, because we don't absolutely have a number of people that we know are deceased inside of there," he said.

It was not immediately clear what started the inferno at the electronic dance music party attended by 50 to 100 people.
