Ending Syria crisis

New York : Bahrain’s Foreign Minister yesterday called on the international community to ramp up efforts to find a comprehensive solution to the Syrian crisis by “respecting the will of the Syrian people”.

“The disaster facing the brotherly Syrian people is the worst humanitarian disaster since the Second World War,” said Minister of Foreign Affairs, Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa.

In this regard, the Minister further said: “Bahrain has been and will remain committed through the Royal Charity Organisation to provide various forms of help and support to the people of Syria.”

The Minister was speaking during the high-level international meeting on Syria held at the initiative of the European Union on the sidelines of the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Shaikh Khalid stressed that there is a need for “enhancing International cooperation to return Syria to the path of security and stability.”

“It should be based on Security Council resolution 2254 and Geneva Statement of the Year 2012, and by respecting the will of the Syrian people”.

The minister also praised the outcome of the Astana talks and urged all to abide by them and not to allow any party to exploit them in order to serve expansionist ambitions or to support the militias.

Further highlighting the depth of the crisis, Shaikh Khalid called on the international community to support the countries that bear the brunt of hosting the Syrian brothers and provide them with aid and relief.
