Qatar Prime Minister invited on Saudi soil for the first time since Gulf Crisis

Following the invite from the King of Saudi Arabia to attend an emergency Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit, Qatar’s Prime Minister Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani will attend the summit in Mecca this weekend making it one of the first high-level meetings with blockading nations since the embargo was imposed nearly two years ago.

The summits have been called for to discuss the implications of drone strikes on oil installations in Saudi, and the attacks on four vessels, including two Saudi oil tankers, off the UAE coast, early this month.

Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, H E Lulwa Al Khater, tweeted: “The State of Qatar, which has never failed to ensure its active and positive participation in Arab, Islamic and international events, is once again prioritising the supreme interest of the region over inter-state differences”.

Therefore, the wise leadership of the State of Qatar has decided to participate in the three summits of Makkah with the participation of His Excellency the Prime Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser Al Thani,” the tweet said.

Sources revealed that on Wednesday the face-to-face between Sheikh Abdullah and top officials from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and other countries will take place at the meeting starting on Thursday.

Since June 2017, Saudi Arabia along with the United Arab Emirates and their allies have enforced a boycott of Qatar including bans on shipping, trade, direct flights, overflight and land crossings.
