Professor Jeffrey Sachs hails HRH Premier’s global initiatives

Cabinet Minister Mohammed Al Mutawa yesterday met Columbia University Professor, Sustainable Development Centre director Jeffrey David Sachs. The meeting was attended by Shaikh Hussam bin Isa Al Khalifa, president of the award of His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa for Sustainable Development, as well as Supreme Environment Council (SEC) Chief Executive Officer Dr Mohammed Mubarak bin Daina.

Professor Sachs will be the keynote speaker in the second edition of the forum “Bahrain’s Shared Visions for Successful Future”, which will be held tomorrow at the UN headquarters in New York. The minister commended the role of academic figures, scientific institutions and think tanks in supporting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), hailing HRH the Premier’s keenness on promoting sustainable development.

He said HRH the Premier’s Sustainable Development Award represents an initiative to encourage pioneering ideas, projects and personalities who contribute to promoting sustainable development to achieve societies’ welfare.  The two sides discussed aspects co-operation between the HRH the Premier’s Sustainable Development Award Committee and the Sustainable Development Centre, towards achieving joint goals.

He commended the role and efforts exerted by the Sustainable Development Centre, stressing matching visions and goals between the think tanks and the HRH the Premier’s Sustainable Development Award Committee. Professor Jeffrey David Sachs commended Bahrain’s strides in all development fields and progress in achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, which reflect an ambitious vision to keep pace with the global development.

He commended HRH the Premier’s global pioneering initiatives to encourage and motivate international work and co-operation in the fields of sustainable development, stressing the importance of the award.  He also congratulated HRH the Premier after the United Nations endorsed his initiative and declared April 5 as the International Day of Conscience, in a pioneering step that reflects his international standing.
