Pan-nation drive nets 39 tonnes of waste in UAE

A total of 27,865 participants joined the drive.

 

The 18th cycle of the annual Clean up UAE campaign exceeded the expectations for the total number of participations across the emirates and the total amount of waste collected and recycled, said Habiba Al Mar'ashi, chairperson of Emirates Environmental Group (EEG).

She stated that a total of 27,865 participants collected 39 tonnes of waste of which 1,420kg were segregated for recycling. The participants were able to cover a total area of 54.5sqkm - 3.5km was covered in Sharjah, 3km in Umm Al Quwain, 5km in Ajman, 18km in Dubai, 20km in Abu Dhabi, 2km in Fujairah, and finally 3km in Ras Al Khaimah respectively.

Participants managed to collect 2.5 tonnes of waste from Sharjah, 3 tonnes from Umm Al Quwain, 5 tonnes from Ajman, 12.5 tonnes from Dubai, 16.8 tonnes from Abu Dhabi, 1.5 tonnes from Fujairah, and 1.5 tonnes from Ras Al Khaimah.

She affirmed her affiliation and pride towards this campaign that has grown stronger throughout the years. "A great deal of effort was put by the EEG to make this year's campaign the biggest one yet; with the help of our participants and the environment caregivers from various sectors of the community."

Al Mar'ashi emphasised on the importance of raising environmental awareness in light of the growing environmental challenges being faced nowadays and threatens the developmental path of the country.
