Hyundai plans to build an air taxi
Hyundai has announced plans to build an air taxi capable of transporting four passengers and a pilot and which would be available via ride-share app Uber.
The South Korean automaker plans to build its flying cars on a large scale, Hyundai president and chief innovation officer Youngcho Chi said at this year's CES tech fair in Las Vegas, where the company showed off a concept design resembling a giant drone, Deutsche press agency (dpa) reported.
The Hyundai electric air taxi will be significantly quieter than a helicopter and will also have a parachute system for emergency landings, the company said.
Uber has already been working on its own air taxi platform Elevate, which will use flying vehicles from various companies, for several years with its commercial launch reportedly planned for 2023 in select cities.
Hyundai also used the fair in Las Vegas to announce plans to build an autonomous, multi-use vehicle called S-Link, which could be used to transport people or goods or serve as a mobile business, office or hotel room.
Rival carmaker Toyota had announced plans for a similar vehicle at the CES two years ago.
