Dubai tourist caught with drugs at airport jailed for 10 years

The defendant challenged the verdict but the Dubai Court of Appeals upheld the lower court ruling.

A British tourist - convicted of possessing and smuggling marijuana oil and cocaine - has lost her appeal against a 10-year jail term.

The Dubai Court of First Instance had found the 31-year-old woman guilty of importing marijuana oil weighing 4.4kg and about 1.4g of cocaine.

She was sentenced to 10 years in prison and ordered to pay a Dh50,000 fine. She will also be deported after the imprisonment, the court ruled.

The defendant challenged the verdict but the Dubai Court of Appeals upheld the lower court ruling.

The case dates back to April last year when customs inspectors at Dubai International Airport found the drugs in the traveller's baggage.

She was then referred to the anti-narcotics department of the Dubai Police.

A crime lab report confirmed the quantities of the illegal drugs seized from the defendant.
The new ruling can be challenged at the Court of Cassation.
