Iran announces 129 new deaths

IRAN

Iran announced on Monday that 129 new deaths from the emerging coronavirus were recorded, in the highest daily toll in one of the countries most affected by the epidemic.

"We call on everyone to take this virus very seriously and never try to travel to any province," Iranian Health Ministry spokesman Kianosh Jahanpur told a televised news conference.

The latest toll brings the total number of deaths in the Islamic Republic to 853 since February 19, when the government announced the first two deaths from the epidemic in Iran.

Jahanpur also spoke of 1053 confirmed new infections over the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 14,991 injuries.

The Tehran Province recorded the highest number of new infections with two hundred cases, but the number was 50 less than the previous day.

Isfahan Governorate (Central) ranked next with 118 injuries, while Mazandaran (North) came next with 96 cases.

"Judging carefully, it appears that the effects of the overall efforts of the people and the interventions of the health system (...) are apparent in Qom and Ghilan," Jahanpur said.

Qom (center), where the virus first appeared in the country, registered 19 new infections, bringing the total to 1023.

A total of 858 cases were reported in Ghilan, including 18 new cases. It is known that the region in northern Iran is a tourist destination and is among the 31 most affected provinces of Iran.
