The United States exceeds 200,000 deaths from the epidemic

The United States has crossed the 200,000 mark, while a record wave of new infections has prompted authorities in Europe to re-impose strict health restrictions.

The most powerful country in the world recorded this toll just 41 days before the presidential elections, while the World Health Organization warned that new infections in all parts of the world have reached record levels.

US President Donald Trump, who is facing a tough reelection battle and trailing Democratic rival Joe Biden in opinion polls, said crossing the threshold of 200,000 deaths is "a disgrace" and blaming China.

In a videotaped message, Trump delivered a speech before the United Nations General Assembly, which opened on Tuesday, attacking Beijing for not doing anything to stop the spread of what he called a "Chinese virus."

Trump accused Beijing of allowing the Corona virus "to leave China and infect the whole world," explaining, "With the start of the virus spreading, China banned domestic flights while allowing planes to leave the country."

He said that "China must be held accountable for its actions," referring to the Covid-19 crisis.

According to Agence France-Presse statistics, more than 31 million people have been infected around the world and nearly 962,000 have died of COVID-19 since the virus appeared in Wuhan, in eastern China, in late 2019.

On Monday, the World Health Organization stated that nearly two million infections were recorded worldwide in the one week until September 20.

The United Nations agency stated that the 6 percent increase is "the largest number of infections ever recorded in one week since the start of the epidemic."
