We beat the virus again, says New Zealand PM Arden
Wellington
Jacinda Ardern of New Zealand once again declared beating the virus after containing the second wave of infection, yesterday. The Prime Minister also announced that the country is easing restrictions in its largest city. New Zealand declared wiping out the virus first in May after a strict lockdown.
However, after enjoying 102 days without community transmission, in August, the virus made a come in Auckland also forcing the city’s 1.5 million people into lockdown for almost three weeks.
Now after reporting no cases for the past 12 days, Ardern said the infection is now under control.
"It felt longer and dragged on in what was already starting to feel like a very long year," she said.
"But despite this, Aucklanders and New Zealanders stuck to the plan that has worked twice now, and beat the virus again."
Reports say Auckland has now joined the rest of New Zealand on level one, the lowest rating on the government's four-tier virus alert system.
This means, there will be no restrictions on social gatherings.
But Ardern, who faces a general election on October 17, warned success could not be taken for granted.
"A resurgence of the virus is not our only worry, the resurgence of complacency is right up there too," Ardern said.
