Over 210 people were injured when two light rail trains collided in Kuala Lumpur on Monday evening.

At least 47 of the injuries were serious, according to Singapore-based broadcaster Channel News Asia, citing rescue workers. No deaths were reported.

Malaysian Transport Minister Wee K Siong said that one of the trains was on a test run when the collision took place shortly after 8.30 pm (1230 GMT) while the trains were running underground between two central Kuala Lumpur stations, dpa international reported.

Of the 238 passengers on board, 213 sustained injuries, according to officials.

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said he has ordered an investigation into the crash and requested that the injured and hospitalized "receive comprehensive treatment."

Malaysia's hospitals have been under pressure in recent weeks due to the coronavirus pandemic, with record deaths and case numbers reported on Sunday and Monday.

Wee said the crash was the first since the LRT light rail system began operating in 1998, though there have been several lesser accidents, including carriages derailing, which resulted in minor injuries to passengers.
