UN says Syria crisis worsening
Syria's humanitarian crisis is worsening, with some 13.5 million people now in need of aid, including six million children, the UN aid chief said Tuesday.
Stephen O'Brien, the UN humanitarian affairs under secretary-general, told the UN Security Council that there had been an increase of 1.2 million people in need of aid over the past 10 months.
Of the 680,000 migrants that have crossed the Mediterranean this year, over 50 percent are Syrian.
"They have a right to asylum without any form of discrimination," he said.
Some 6.5 million Syrians are displaced inside the country and 4.2 million have fled abroad in what O'Brien described as "one of the largest displacement crisis of modern times."
More than 240,000 people have died in the war, now in its fifth year.
