An explosion in a gas pipeline near Paracha Chowk in Karachi's Shershah neighbourhood has killed at least 10 people and injured 13 others on Saturday.

Pakistani media reported that a search and rescue operation is underway. The explosion damaged a nearby private bank building as well as several cars parked in the area.

Eyewitnesses on the spot claimed many people were buried underneath the debris of the building, according to media reports. Two excavators were called to the site to remove the debris and rescue anyone trapped there.

Police and rangers have cordoned off the area, while a bomb disposal unit arrived at the location of the blast. The unit will investigate the cause of the blast after police conclude their search operation.
