Legendary Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar passes away

India's singing legend Lata Mangeshkar has passed away, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari tweeted on Sunday morning.
She was admitted to a city hospital in early January this year after she tested positive for Covid-19 and was also diagnosed with pneumonia. Lata Mangeshkar was admitted to the ICU with mild symptoms and was recovering slowly.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to pay tribute to the legend:
'I am anguished beyond words. The kind and caring Lata Didi has left us. She leaves a void in our nation that cannot be filled. The coming generations will remember her as a stalwart of Indian culture, whose melodious voice had an unparalleled ability to mesmerise people.'
Earlier on Saturday, veteran singer Asha Bhosle visited her sister at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital.
The 88-year-old singer had rushed to meet Mangeshkar who after she was once again put on ventilator support, due to her worsened condition on Saturday.
After her visit, Bhosle also shared an update about Mangeshkar’s health with the media.
“The doctor has said that she is stable now,” the singer had shared.
Mangeshkar began singing in her teens, and in a career spanning 73 years sang more than an estimated 15,000 songs in 36 languages.
