Israel is reportedly set to dispatch a naval officer to an official posting in Bahrain, The Times of Israel in a report said.

The report, without naming the official, said the official will travel to Bahrain in the next few weeks. He will serve as a liaison for the United States 5th Fleet, the report said quoting Channel 13.

The Times of Israel report says the move was agreed during Defence Minister Benny Gantz’s visit last week and the officer’s deployment is seen as a first step to building further cooperation in the coming years.

However, the IDF denied that there was any arrangement to send an officer, but indicated that the matter was under discussion. The army said it “is constantly examining opportunities to deepen military cooperation with the countries of the region.

At the moment, it has not been agreed to place an IDF officer in another country.” Gantz had signed a memorandum of understanding with his Bahraini counterpart at the Bahraini Defence Ministry headquarters in Manama.
