A Saudi Arabian rail company’s advertisement seeking 30 female train drivers attracted 28,000 applications.

It is the first time such roles have been advertised for women in the kingdom.

The successful candidates will drive high-speed trains between the holy cities of Mecca and Medina after a year of training.

The Spanish railway company, Renfe, said online assessment of academic certificates and English language skills helped it cut applications to half. The company would filter the rest of the list by mid-March, said a Guardian report.

Renfe currently employs 80 male drivers in Saudi Arabia and is training another 50.

The participation of women in the workforce has almost doubled over the past five years to 33% in Saudi Arabia, and more women than men entered the workforce in the first half of last year.

Saudi Arabia had issued a historic decision allowing women to drive on the 24th of June 2018.
