The Taliban government in Afghanistan on Friday called for peace between Russia and Ukraine. It expressed its concern over civilian casualties as Russian forces threatened the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv.
“All parties need to desist from taking positions that could intensify violence”, the statement read calling for dialogue. "The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, in line with its foreign policy of neutrality, calls for both sides of the conflict to resolve the crisis through dialogue and peaceful means."
Interestingly this came five months after the Taliban took over Afghanistan by brute force.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin called on the Ukrainian military to seize power in their country, a day after Moscow launched an invasion of its southern neighbour.
"I once again appeal to the military personnel of the armed forces of Ukraine: do not allow neo-Nazis and (Ukrainian radical nationalists) to use your children, wives and elders as human shields," Putin said at a televised meeting with Russia's security council.
"Take power into your own hands, it will be easier for us to reach an agreement."
Putin added that Russian servicemen in Ukraine were acting "bravely, professionally and heroically."
