An Egyptian has successfully raised $2.1 million through a crowdfunding campaign to purchase the world’s most expensive drug Zolgensma for their daughter, who should take it before turning two, AlArabiya news reports quoting local media.
According to Clinical Trial Arena, the prescription drug Zolgensma, sold by Swiss pharmaceutical giant Novartis, is the most expensive in the world as one spinal injection costs $2.1 million.
It’s used to treat children who are less than two years old and who suffer from spinal muscular atrophy – a genetic disease that has several types and that weakens the muscles hence resulting in problems in movement, Zolgensma explained on its official website. It is given as a one-time infusion into a vein.
According to Shorouk News, the young child, Ruqayyah, who is one year and 11 months old, suffers from spinal muscular atrophy type 2.
According to Cleveland Clinic, symptoms of spinal muscular atrophy type 2 start to appear when a child is between six months and 18 months old.
