A specialised surgical team from the King Hamad University Hospital (KHUH) has succeeded in separating two conjoined female twins in Tanzania. Five specialists in the fields of anesthesia, pediatric surgery, and plastic surgery, led by Consultant Paediatric Surgeon at the KHUH, Professor Martin Corbally, participated in the complex operation that lasted about eight continuous hours.
KHUH Commander, Major-General Dr. Shaikh Salman bin Atiyatullah Al Khalifa, said that the surgery had been carried out as part of an agreement signed between King Hamad University Hospital and the Irish Child Life, a charity society which extends a lifeline to distressed children in Tanzania and Vietnam since 2012.
He added that the KHUH had responded to a call to save the life of the Siamese twins, by dispatching the team to the Muhimbili Hospital to carry out the surgery.
The medical team confirmed the success of the operation despite the difficulties and challenges encountered during the separation process, he said, indicating that the operation is considered among the most complex as the twins share their liver and rib cage.
