The US President Joe Biden plans to appoint a general in Ukraine to lead the military training and relief efforts, the Wall Street Journal reported citing US officials.
The officials indicated that in the coming weeks, the US administration also plans to name its military mission to support Ukraine.
The name of the operation formally recognises US military support, akin to how the Pentagon dubbed the missions in Iraq and Afghanistan Operation Iraqi Freedom, "Enduring Freedom" and “Guardian of Freedom”.
The naming of training and assistance is of great bureaucratic importance, as it usually entails long-term dedicated funding and the possibility of special pay, and rewards for military personnel participating in these missions.
Choice expected to be a two or three-star general, reflects the creation of a team responsible for coordinating the effort, moving from a largely one-off effort to train and help Ukrainians for many years.
This comes as the United States announced the largest military aid package to Ukraine, worth about $3 billion. On Au gust 25, President Zelensky had a telephone conversation with Joe Biden.
